Science Intent Statement

The Colchester Primary Curriculum recognises and values the importance of science and scientific enquiry. Science at the Colchester Primary Schools aims to develop a stimulating, practical and engaging high-quality curriculum that inspires the next generation to succeed and excel in science. We do this through fully adhering to the aims of the national curriculum and fostering a healthy curiosity and interest in the sciences (Physics, Biology and Chemistry). At the heart of our progressive science curriculum is scientific investigation. Lessons are delivered through varied systematic investigations, enabling children to be equipped for life to ask and answer scientific questions about the world around them.

This curriculum encompasses the acquisition of knowledge, concepts, skills and positive attitudes. Throughout the programmes of study, the children will acquire and develop the key knowledge within each unit and across each year group, as well as the application of scientific skills to stimulate creative thought. Children learn to ask and contribute to scientific questions and begin to appreciate the way in which science will affect the future on a personal, national and global level.

Investigation is at the heart of our teaching. Through enquiry-led learning, children explore scientific processes, use equipment with confidence, and develop their ability to observe, predict, experiment, and analyse results. We encourage them to see challenges as opportunities and to embrace mistakes as part of the learning journey.

By embedding ‘Working Scientifically’ across all year groups, we help children build the ability to communicate their ideas, work collaboratively, and think independently. As they progress through their primary years, they develop the skills needed to approach science with confidence and curiosity, ensuring they are fully prepared to continue their learning journey into Key Stage 3 and beyond.
