Intent Statement for teaching Languages

The Colchester Schools’ Primary Language Curriculum will teach our Key Stage 2 pupils how to communicate in the French language – across the range of Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing skills. It will also give them a curiosity for and some knowledge of both France and other French-speaking countries and cultures.

Our Languages Curriculum has been designed to be highly engaging, so that pupils learn and respond to many different French stimuli such as simple French songs and poems, embodying our value of Boundless Creativity.  There will also be structured grammar lessons for pupils to understand verb structures to be able to write and talk in complete sentences.

Learning about France and French-speaking nations will also give our pupils empathy and understanding as to how life differs in other parts of the World, embracing our value of Heartfelt Compassion.

Through our curriculum, we also look to build the confidence of our French learners and aspire to give them Courageous Optimism; this will be demonstrated by them feeling confident at having a go and by them having the enthusiasm, moving up to secondary school, to be keen to learn other languages such as Spanish and German.
