PE Subject Intent

Within the Colchester Schools Hub, Physical Education (PE) is designed to inspire children to lead happy, healthy and active lives—both within their local community and beyond. Our inclusive and accessible curriculum ensures that every child, regardless of ability, need or prior experience, is supported to reach their full potential.

We prioritise individual progress through high‑quality PE experiences that also nurture social and emotional development. Lessons are intentionally structured to promote compassionate values such as teamwork, fairness and respect, encouraging children to demonstrate these both in action and attitude.

Through a wide range of sporting opportunities—whether working independently or as part of a team—children learn to reflect on their performance, set personal goals and develop a lasting enjoyment of physical activity.

We cultivate a love of being active by:

  • Encouraging self‑evaluation and personal improvement
  • Promoting lifelong participation through engaging, motivating lessons
  • Embedding core values including teamwork, fairness and respect
  • Providing diverse sporting experiences: individual, team-based, competitive and collaborative

IMPLEMENTATION

Our PE curriculum provides a rich and varied programme of competitive, team-based, and individual sports, ensuring every child is actively engaged and recognised for both effort and achievement. PE is taught twice weekly by class teachers and our dedicated EPC sports coach, with lessons designed to build on prior learning, strengthen core skills, and deepen tactical understanding. Children regularly apply their learning in a supportive environment that champions positive competition and nurtures confidence.

Termly intra‑school and inter‑school competitions promote teamwork, aspiration, and collaboration across the Colchester Hub, while ongoing assessment—conducted within lessons and reviewed termly—guides planning, informs targeted support, and celebrates progress. Annual Sports Premium Impact Statements demonstrate the tangible benefits of funding on participation, skill development, and pupil outcomes. Leadership oversight ensures consistent delivery, robust monitoring, and continuous improvement, enabling every child to experience a high‑quality, inclusive, and enriching PE journey throughout their time at our school.

IMPACT

Through high-quality teaching and a vibrant sporting culture, PE delivers measurable outcomes that extend beyond the classroom:

  • Pupils develop responsibility for their physical health and understand the importance of regular activity.
  • Children apply learned techniques confidently in a variety of settings and demonstrate perseverance, teamwork and leadership.
  • Assessment and tracking show year-on-year improvement and progression in physical competencies aligned with National Curriculum and EYFS expectations.
  • Regular staff collaboration and feedback cycles help highlight areas of strength and inform continued professional development.
  • Pupil voice is central: perception surveys enable children to share their experiences and suggest improvements, ensuring teaching remains responsive and engaging.
  • Ongoing dialogue between staff and sports coaches supports adaptive teaching and fosters a cohesive approach to physical development.
